Baston won the toss and decided to bat on a damp, green wicket which showed signs of inconsistency from the first over. J Biggs opened the bowling with Oscar Jackson at the other end and made use of the facilities. J Biggs removed their opener without troubling the scoreboard and Jackson actually getting some turn resulting in removing the Baston skipper after a great catch from Harry Armstrong!
Biggs, the leading wicket taker in the league this season, showed why he is at the top of the table with a consistently dangerous 9 over spell, eventually taking 4 wickets for only 13 runs! A simple dropped catch in the slips denying him another 5fer!
With the Baston batsmen struggling to get the ball away, Burghley turned to the experience of Jim McIntosh and Simon Sherwin. Line and length resulted in more wickets going down for not many runs. McIntosh took 3 for 27, Sherwin conceding only 10 runs in 8 overs! McIntosh finished his allocated overs with 2 wickets on his last 2 balls so will be on a hattrick next time he bowls. This led to Steve Harker-Brown being asked to finish off the tail enders which he did with accurate darts. 2 for 6 from his 2.1 overs meant Baston were all out for 87.
The chase was not going to be easy though - dad and lad opening pair of Chris and Harry Armstrong found this out pretty quickly. Armstrong senior played back to a straight ball in the first over and was castled, this was quickly followed by Armstrong Junior playing a similar stroke to a similar ball and same outcome, leaving Burghley 2 down without a run scored off the bat! At 2 for 2, Matt Davies and Charlie Biggs settled things down and started picking off bad balls and getting the chase moving. Davies looked settled until he chipped one straight to mid-on, whilst C Biggs remained solid. Davies' dismissal brought Lewis Banthorpe to the crease and from ball one he showed some aggression.
Biggs and Banthorpe put on a partnership in the 70s; Biggs with a solid and mature innings of 25* kept one end up for Banthorpe to be the aggressor, ending on 47* and winning the game for Burghley. It wasn't pretty but it was effective!
